Ruwais Sulphur Expansion Project, Abu Dhabi - UAE
For over 25 years the industrial area of Ruwais, some 240 km west of Abu Dhabi City in the UAE, has been servicing the oil and gas industry, turning it into one of the most important economic centres of the Emirate. It is also the home of a Sulphur Handling Terminal, operated by Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (TAKREER) as part of its Ruwais Refinery Complex. Because of the planned expansions of the upstream units the sulphur production is expected to increase by the year of 2008, demanding an urgent increase of the existing harbour capacity.
The Scope of the Works consists out of dredging an approach channel, a turning basis and berth area for the navigation of Panama size bulk carriers (DWT up to 65.000 Tons). Next to this extension the existing port will be deepened till -15m

In total 3,900,000 m³ of soil, consisting out of 2,700,000m³ rocky and 1,200,000m³ silty sand, will be dredged. The dredged spoil is pumped over a distance of minimum 3.800m till maximum 6.000m to the reclamation area, where it is evenly spread out. To bridge this great pump distance a booster is employed to help do the job
Works started in March 2007 and is expected to be finished within 14 months. To complete the job in time and because of the bulk part of the material to be dredged is rock, MEDCO mobilized its powerful heavy duty CSD “Al Mahaar” to do the job
