PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Al Raha Beach Development consists of the reclamation of a 5 million square meters platform for a new City District in the vicinity of Abu Dhabi

The new city , lying at the water-frontage at Al Raha Beach will provide diversified features ranging from commercial, cultural, entertainment and public amenities to residential developments, accommodating more than 120,000 inhabitants. Being situated along the Abu Dhabi highway, near Khalifa Town and Abu Dhabi International Airport , Al Raha Beach will serve as a new Gateway to Abu Dhabi City .

The Al Raha Beach project consists of the reclamation of a platform, containing 40 millions cubic meters of sand, of which 25 million square meters will be dredged from borrow areas in the vicinity of the project and 15 millions cubic meters of fill be brought in by lorries.

Due to the presence of a soft silt layer, the first part of the project consists of capping a sand layer on top of the unstable material. The sand layer is placed in small successive layers to stabilize the soft material below. This capping is done by means of the small Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) “Kalis 2”, type Beaver 3300 and the Spreader Barge, “Gajah”. The “Kalis 2” dredges material in the dedicated borrow areas and pumps the dredged materials to the “Gajah”. The “Gajah” is constantly moving and gently spreading the dredged material in consecutive stabilizing layers. When the soft silt layer has been sufficiently stabilized and consolidated and upon confirmation of the Engineer, our large CSD “Al Mahaar “ is deployed for the bulk dredging and reclamation on a continuous basis.

In the near future extra capacity will be added to ensure timely completion of the project. At least small CSD and one Trailer Hopper Suction Dredger will be brought in. The extra CSD will also work with a new spreader pontoon, that is currently being constructed. The TSHD will dredge material from an approved off-shore borrow area and bring the material to Al Raha Beach.
