A key objective of the NPP is to replace the existing Doha Port as the main commercial port of Qatar. The current location of Doha Port is incompatible with plans for the development of waterfront areas within the city and therefore the Government has decided to relocate the port to a site nearer existing and future industrial zones.
The Site
The NPP will be constructed at an inland site approximately 25 km south of Doha City, between Mesaieed and Al Wakrah. The site for the NPP has been allocated within Emiri Decree No. 35 of 2009. It is strategically located to allow easy access to the existing and planned industrial zones south and west of Doha including Mesaieed Industrial City, Qatar Economic Zone 3, and the Doha industrial area.
Throughput and schedule
The NPP is to be designed for an ultimate throughput which includes:
- 6 million Twenty-foor Equivalent Units (TEU) of containersized cargo;
- 1.7 million tonnes of general cargo;
- 0.96 million tonnes of grain; and
- 500,000 vehicles
